A homicide investigator, Fitch, was kidnapped and put in a trap where he had to tear his fingers off to prevent electrocution in a filling water basin; he also failed to escape, and died. Due of his previous association with Fitch, several police began to assume that Banks may be the culprit. On arriving at the station, Schenk's tattooed skin is found inside an animal puppet. This butcher shop, where Banks and his father, former police chief Marcus Banks, used to frequent, is now the target of a lead found in a little vial inside the box that was found by the police. The crew finds a tape recorder and a skinned body, which they identify as that of Schenk. Taking matters into his own hands, Marcus heads to a warehouse, where he is kidnapped. In the precinct's cold storage, Garza is abducted and forced to cut her spinal chord with a blade in order to prevent hot wax from dripping into her face. If she does not, she will die from her injuries as soon as Banks comes across her corpse and the wax has melted.
Banks gets apprehended while following a lead and awakens in the warehouse, shackled to a pipe with a hacksaw nearby. He contemplates chopping off his arm, but instead uses a bobby pin to get away. Peter Dunleavy, his former colleague who was sacked and imprisoned after Banks disclosed a murder he committed, is later discovered shackled in place. A massive glass-crushing machine stands in front of him, modified to throw shrapnel at him quickly. Banks may either liberate him or leave him to die, according to a recording recorder. Despite Banks' best efforts, he is unable to get the key in time to rescue Dunleavy. Banks then discovers Schenk in another chamber, who had been the copycat all along, having faked his own death by using the skinned body of the robber who lured Bozwick into the tunnels. He reveals that his last name is Emmerson, and that he is the son of Charlie Emmerson, who was shot and murdered by Dunleavy after agreeing to testify against a corrupt officer. Marcus, he also admits, purposely sheltered corrupt police throughout his term as chief in order to scrub the streets of crime more quickly under Article 8.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is the only film in the Saw series that does not physically star Tobin Bell or depict the Jigsaw persona onscreen beyond images. Bell portrayed John Kramer / Jigsaw in all of the other Saw films, but he did not return for this installment. Bousman said that he did not want to replace Bell in the famous role of Jigsaw and emphasized that the murderer in the film is not the real Jigsaw but rather a copycat of the character. The participation of Chris Rock in Spiral: From the Book of Saw
After Jigsaw, Stolberg and Goldfinger pitched a new Saw film based only on John Kramer / Jigsaw to series veterans Mark Burg and Oren Koules, but Burg and Koules phoned the pair to advise them about Rock's plans for a new film, with Rock calling them soon after to explore his notion. Tobin Bell did not reprise his normal role as Jigsaw in Spiral (2021), making it the first Saw film to do so.
Stolberg told Bloody Disgusting that Jigsaw was never in any draft of the screenplay for Spiral (2021), even though they talked about it after the first test screening and all the way through post-production. They thought that including Jigsaw would change the Updates core of the story they were trying to tell, not because they didn't like the character but because they wanted to move the franchise in a new direction. Stolberg also thought that because of the franchise's timeline, any possible connection between John Kramer and William Schenk/The Spiral: From the Book of Saw Killer should have happened when the latter was still a child. Stolberg and Goldfinger once proposed an after-credits scene in which Kramer met a young Schenk after the murder of the latter's father and became friends with him, maybe giving him the puppet he later uses as the Spiral Killer.
